Georgia business proved to be a frontrunner in this year’s Fortune 500 List. With nine businesses on the list, Atlanta tied for fourth place among cities with the most Fortune 500 companies.

One noteworthy company is AGCO Corp, a Duluth-based agricultural equipment maker. They generated $8.4 billion in revenue and garnered a ranking of 306, an improvement from 2008’s ranking of 359.

The fact that AGCO improved in revenue and ranking is indicative that Georgia agribusiness remains positive during these difficult economic times, as global demand for a safe and secure source of food, fiber and fuel remains constant.

Fortune magazine compiles its list of the biggest and best businesses based on 2008 fiscal and calendar year financial performance, focusing on revenue. Thirteen Georgia companies made the 2009 Fortune 500 list and sixteen other Georgia-based companies made the Fortune 1000 list.
